Live Like Lou joined Phi Delta Theta in a special on-field presentation at the San Francisco Giant's Lou Gehrig Day game. Elizabeth Duncan received a Live Like Lou Iron Horse Scholarship, and we recognized Mike Yastrzemski of the San Francisco Giants as a finalist for Phi Delta Theta Fraternity’s Lou Gehrig Memorial Award.
Live Like Lou presented an Iron Horse Scholarship to incoming college freshman Elizabeth Duncan of Auburn, California. Overcoming the loss of her father Jon, uncle Jeff, and aunt Jennifer, all to ALS, Elizabeth Duncan embodies resilience, compassion, and determination, graduating high school with a 3.8 GPA while supporting her family. Elizabeth’s first-hand experience with ALS has led to her pursuit of a Nursing degree that will begin at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego this fall.
Elizabeth said, “As I cared for my dad’s medical needs during his battle with ALS, I realized that it was an expression of my love for him. This confirmed my desire to be a nurse and highlighted my personal strengths: critical thinking, remaining calm under pressure, and compassion.
The Gehrig Award is presented annually to a Major League Baseball player who best exemplifies the giving character of Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig, who was a member of the Fraternity’s Columbia University chapter. The award was first presented in 1955 and is permanently maintained at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York.
Live Like Lou is so appreciative of our community and supporters who were in attendance to help us leave ALS better than we found it!
Together, we can make a difference while honoring Lou Gehrig’s legacy. Here are ways you can help!
