ALS Families
ALS Awareness

The Live Like Lou Foundation delivers meaningful volunteer support to ALS families. Live Like Lou volunteers are available for one-time or short-term help in and around the home.

When your ALS family registers with the Live Like Lou Foundation, the organization will recruit a Phi Delta Theta volunteer near your home. Once matched with a volunteer, the two of you take it from there! Assistance includes spring cleaning, yard work, outdoor repairs, painting, cleaning windows, hanging holiday lights, and more! There is no fee or obligation from ALS families in exchange for this service, and families may cancel the arrangement at any time. *Live Like Lou services do not include medical equipment, supply handling, transportation, or financial support.

Check out some of the projects our volunteers have completed this summer!

Paul with his University of Cincinnati Phi Delt volunteers

Paul - Ohio

Paul was diagnosed with ALS in 2022 and was matched with Steve, a Phi Delta Theta - University of Cincinnati alumnus, through our Connect and Serve program. The Tepe family was looking for volunteers to clean their windows and screens, and Steve gathered some helpers who were up for the challenge!

Paul's caregiver and wife, Christy, shared this photo and wrote that their family's Live Like Lou volunteer crew members "were awesome!"

Steve - New Hampshire

George, a Phi Delt from Southern New Hampshire University washing windows for Steve

"I have to say I thought I would be uncomfortable with a stranger doing my cleaning. It was just the opposite. It was a pleasure to have George here," shared Steve, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2019.

Steve lives alone in a two-story home and needed help cleaning his windows. Despite it being summer break, George, a Phi Delt from Southern New Hampshire University, recently visited Steve's home with a ladder to assist!

Bruce's family being served by the Phi Delts of Southern New Hampshire University

Bruce - New Hampshire

Bruce was diagnosed with ALS in 2023 and passed away in April. Our Connect and Serve program matched his family with the Phi Delts at Southern New Hampshire University. Earlier this month, they visited to support his loved ones with some yard work.

Mary - Indiana

Mary with her Valparaiso University Phi Delt volunteers

Mary was diagnosed with ALS in 2024 and was matched with the Phi Delts at Valparaiso University through our Connect and Serve program. The men recently visited Mary's home to help with tasks Mary usually did before her ALS diagnosis.

Mary wrote, "The volunteers were so friendly and helpful! They helped with yard work and cleaning that I usually did in the past, and it was a great help."

Thank you Connect and Serve volunteers for helping us leave ALS better than we found it!
