ALS Awareness
ALS Community

Here’s an inside look at the incredible work of the Live Like Lou Foundation over the past quarter. Enjoy updates from our volunteers and researchers, and check out how our donors help us leave ALS better than we found it in honor of our namesake and baseball Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig and the more than 30,000 people living with Lou Gehrig’s disease across North America.

Funding Neurodegenerative disease research at the University of Notre Dame

Laurie and John Roselle established an endowment with Live Like Lou in 2022 to fund undergraduate neurodegenerative disease research in Indiana. With more than $248,919 raised, the second Live Like Lou research grant was awarded to Notre Dame student Margaret (Maggie) Rakonick. Maggie did research last summer in Dr. Brian Blagg's lab in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. She has been working on an innovative method to treat neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) which are a hallmark of Alzheimer's Disease, ALS, and other neurodegenerative diseases.

Connect and Serve Fall 2024

Our Connect and Serve volunteers are out in full force this fall, serving ALS families in Missouri, Michigan, Virginia, Florida, West Virginia, and more!

In Missouri, Riley Zack, a 2019 Westminster College - Missouri graduate, and his Phi Delt brothers served Loren, diagnosed with ALS in 2020, and Tobey. The men recently stopped by to help complete several projects around the yard.

"It is such a blessing that these young men are volunteering their time to help people in need, and we are very grateful," Tobey shared.

We are proud to support families affected by ALS. Read more heartwarming stories from our families served by Connect and Serve volunteers.

Lou's Last World Series Homer

A moment in Lou Gehrig's history with perfect timing: this image is believed to be the last home run Lou Gehrig hit in a World Series. It was October 9, 1937, during game four of the Series, with the defending champion New York Yankees playing against the New York Giants.

Lou finished that season hitting a .351 batting average, 37 home runs, and 158 RBIs. The Yankees lost that day, 3-7, but went on to win the Series in five games, claiming their sixth championship in 15 years.

Lou Gehrig Memorial Scholarship Winner Madelyn Goodman

A Lou Gehrig's disease diagnosis should never stand in the way of a family's dreams. Madelyn Goodman, a recipient of Live Like Lou's 2023 Lou Gehrig Memorial Scholarship, completed her studies at the University of Tennessee last spring and recently started her nursing career at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Madelyn's dad, Jason, was diagnosed with ALS in 2021 and passed away during her junior year. Last year, Live Like Lou made finishing college without additional debt a reality for Madelyn.

The burden of this disease is immense, yet these students' resilience is inspiring. Will you join us in supporting brave, intelligent, and determined students like Madelyn? Your generosity can help these mighty families imagine a future where higher education remains within reach despite the impact of ALS on their families.
