Just a few months before his anticipated retirement and dream of perfecting his golf game, Jim Hilliard was diagnosed with ALS. His ALS fight lasted nearly four years and he passed away in September of 2021. As a family who knows firsthand how devastating it is to live with ALS, his wife and children launched the Team Hilliard Foundation to support ALS organizations devoted to supporting research, treatments, and families affected by Lou Gehrig’s disease. The Live Like Lou Foundation is honored to be one of the beneficiaries of their work in the ALS community.

Earlier this summer, Jim’s son Sam, an outfielder with the Atlanta Braves, was honored as a finalist for the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award in Major League Baseball at Lou Gehrig Day with the Braves. During the pre-game activities, Live Like Lou awarded Zoe Champion with a Lou Gehrig Memorial Scholarship and the Team Hilliard Foundation generously matched our award for Zoe.

Since then, Team Hilliard has chosen to partner with Live Like Lou to award funds they received from the 50/50 raffle during the Braves' Lou Gehrig Day game—as a result, $15,000 in home improvement grant funding will be awarded in Georgia thanks to the Team Hilliard Foundation and Atlanta Braves!

We are honored to apply these funds to our mighty ALS families in Georgia and welcome applications from registered Live Like Lou families. Additional funding is available for ALS families throughout the United States and Canada as well. Grant applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the end of 2023. Applications are due by November 8.
